Alzheimer’s early process starts with excessive harmful protein growth, most often forming amyloid plaques, which interfere with neuron activity and eventually cause tangles with other proteins vital for neuronal transportation and communication. As a result, its most common symptoms include failures to perform rudimentary cerebral-related functions, such as memory loss, difficulty with vocal communication, turbulent mood cycles, and confusion about the patient’s surroundings and the people around them. Unfortunately, these symptoms are not the only side effects that come with an AD diagnosis. Due to the amyloid plaques’ tendency to inhibit neuron activity, brain cells frequently die as the disease continues to fester in the patient, causing the brain to become smaller in size and, therefore, unable to operate. Consequently, many of those who contract Alzheimer’s are more susceptible to bouts of dehydration, poor nutrition, or infection, which can lead to death. Who is affected by Alzheimer’s disease? The main demographic of those affected by Alzheimer’s lies in the elderly population. According to Mayo Clinic, approximately 6.9 million people in the United States who are 65 years old or older live with some form of Alzheimer’s disease. That’s over 2% of our country’s population. And these patients’ suffering doesn’t stop at just Alzheimer’s, too. AD, in addition to being diagnosed over 3 million times a year, is the most common cause of further forms of brain degeneration, the most prominent being dementia. Expanding the scope from America to the whole world, out of the 55 million dementia patients globally, 33 to 38.5 million (60% to 70%) have also been recorded to have Alzheimer's disease. Needless to say, Alzheimer’s isn’t a disease that can simply be ignored; there needs to be a change made, and it needs to be made now. How does the walk help? But one of the biggest obstacles in the advancement of understanding Alzheimer’s is a cruel one: there is no cure. Moreover, due to the complex nature of the brain, as well as the late onset of symptoms, efforts to study the disease have been severely limited on the part of scientists. However, an element of Alzheimer’s research that is within our control is the budget. In addition to the problems listed, one of the most prevalent constraints to Alzheimer’s research comes from a lack of allocation of finances for these initiatives. In fact, according to the Alzheimer’s Association, federal funding for research developments has only reached an unsatisfactory $498 million, which is not enough to address the increasingly dire epidemic of AD cases in this day and age. To combat this, the Alzheimer’s Association founded the Walk to End Alzheimer’s, an annual fundraising event and walk-a-thon dedicated to raising awareness for Alzheimer’s care, support, and research. An event held in over 600 cities and townships alike, it brings people of all different backgrounds, regardless of ability, together for a day filled with fun, education, and most importantly, activism, as a community. How has AAYA been involved? For 2025’s campaign, the Walk to End Alzheimer’s organizers hosted an event in the Bergen-Passaic area of New Jersey. Located in Overpark Park, Ridgefield Park, it ran on the morning of September 14, with 792 participants and 115 teams in attendance. Among these participants were members of AAYA, registered under long-time partner Fox Trail, an organization dedicated to enhancing wellness for residents with neurodegenerative dementias like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Walking alongside caregivers, survivors, and families, AAYA members experienced firsthand the sense of unity and hope that defined the Bergen-Passaic event. From carrying Promise Garden flowers to meeting other younger participants who also contributed to raising money and awareness, our members’ involvement in the walk highlighted how even those who aren’t vulnerable to an ailment can still make an impact towards reducing the threat of the condition. Through this walk, our members were able to not only help out with fundraising, but also learn firsthand from professionals in the dementia and Alzheimer’s wellness field about how to form communities in seemingly unfavorable times. The magic that emerged from this event was the fact that everybody had a different experience to take away from it. One AAYA executive board member, Philip Han, who is also a fellow writer, commented particularly on the diversity of the attendees on the morning of. “It was like I entered a new world,” he recalled, “I saw kids who looked to be in elementary school literally walking side by side with patients and their caretakers. It inspired me, as someone whose family hasn’t suffered with Alzheimer’s, that you don’t need to be personally affected to make an impact.” Personally, I’ve had instances of dementia and Alzheimer’s in my family’s history before. It brought fear knowing that something as basic as my memory could be taken away from me in only a few decades. As a result, seeing all these faces dedicated to making sure that people like me would not have to endure the pain that patients in the past went through turned my fear into comfort. It reminded me that even though disease can take so much away, it can also collect them together in powerful acts of remembrance, determination, and hope for the future. So, what’s next? Over 490,000 participants have joined the walk, and 74 million dollars have been raised this year across the world by the Walk to End Alzheimer’s. Even though the Bergen-Passaic walk has concluded, it’s important to remember that activism doesn’t stop at just one event. As they began to escalate in 2021, book bans have surged into the mainstream and have become a huge issue throughout the nation. Book bans are defined by PEN America as an act against a book based on its content, as a result of campaigns or administrative decisions. PEN America also notes that more than 10,000 book removals took place within the 2023-2024 school year alone. Calls for book censorship are also typically called for by minorities of conservative parents, who have small yet influential voices in school districts and public libraries. An example of an advocacy group that campaigns for the censorship of books is Moms for Liberty, which uses its ‘parental rights’ as an excuse to prevent their children from reading material that contains certain themes, such as those of racism and LGBTQ+ ideals. However, the majority argue for our First Amendment right to freedom of speech and declare that students should be able to have a diverse collection of books to read. Not only does book banning affect communities socially by silencing the voices of minorities, but it also affects the nation economically. While the debate over book bans continues to rise, this article provides an overview of the situation and the stakeholders affected by it. Libraries Public libraries find themselves in the center of this conflict, as they are one of the most important and trusted institutions in American life. Libraries are gathering spaces with free educational resources for students, where children can discover knowledge in reading without financial barriers. However, libraries are facing a significant issue due to the recent rise in book censorship. Libraries are being financially threatened as book ban campaigns are not fully satisfied, and they are running out of funds. An example of this issue is Samuels Public Library in Virginia, which became the target of book ban demands. Because these demands were not fully met, they lost significant county funding for simply refusing to remove titles that seemed ‘offensive.’ Not only does funding directly affect the economic well-being of libraries, but reviewing the books alone is costly as well. Samuels PL spent $50,000 in staff hours and administrative materials evaluating the books and making sure they had no material that could possibly be offensive. Looking at the bigger picture, Samuels PL is not alone. Libraries across the nation now devote hours and hours reviewing books that were called to be removed and facing financial burdens due to a lack of funding. These crucial institutions are now facing a large threat to their survival. Impact on Students Because libraries are in danger and books discussing important themes are being removed or censored, students from low-income families and underserved districts are disadvantaged. University of Houston legal scholar Caroline Puryear asserts that public and school libraries are often the sole providers of free educational materials for children from low socioeconomic backgrounds. When libraries are forced to cut hours, restrict shelves, and remove books, they lose more access to stories and general interest in reading. While some may claim that students can buy restricted books elsewhere, they may not be able to do so due to financial instability. Skip Dye, a senior executive at Penguin Random House, relates a story about his childhood. He remarks that he didn’t grow up wealthy and instead relied on his local public library for every book that he read. Without it, he said he would never have seen the success he faces today. His story displays a larger truth of libraries being places of opportunity for those who may not have a lot of possibilities to begin with. Educators Not only are libraries and students in danger, but also teachers and librarians. This is especially true with those who stand up against book bans, as they are endangering their career. Creating compromises with the campaigns for book censorship can also be stressful, along with dealing with angry emails and tense meetings. An example of this was when former high school teacher Shelley Evans-Marshall was fired for teaching a lesson on censorship. Officials claimed her lessons displayed her political values, and the court upheld her dismissal. This is further exemplified by Elissa Malespina, who was a library media specialist at Union High School, and her experience of being fired for books containing racist themes in the school library. Because of this, she faced mental health issues and was forced to find a job in a different field after economic hardship. Clearly, as teachers meet similar fates as these, their incomes are at risk. Some educators and librarians who fight back against book bans are even classified as registered sex offenders, ruining their reputation and their career for the rest of their lives. A fear of the punishments and consequences that come with advocating for free speech and speaking against book banning is what is making many educators comply with book censorship appeals. An introduction to the nature of language Language, on the surface, may seem like an aspect that is just simply second nature. After all, it is a feature of life that all humans are inherently born with the ability to replicate and comprehend. However, within the immediate instincts to respond with “Doing well!” to a “How are you?” or “Thanks, you too!” to a “Have a good day!” lies a hidden truth: one’s own thought patterns. That’s right: your speech can be explained by sociological phenomena used to study human behavior as well. But that realization hasn’t always been so obvious. Cognitive scientists have for years searched for a reason as to how language could tell what a person thinks or believes, even if it isn’t explicitly stated in their words. Today, their work has paid off due to their impacts on two key aspects of psychological studies: cognition and metacognition. Photo courtesy of ABC News. In order to understand how cognition and metacognition are affected by language, we must first learn about how these connections came to be. This was the thought process that Noam Chomsky, an American professor of linguistics at colleges like the University of Arizona and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, had about the way scholars viewed the structure of language. Contrary to the views of late 20th-century linguists, Chomsky believed that language was a system rooted in general cognitive abilities like categorization and reasoning rather than being a system that was detached from human understanding. Chomsky went against the grain of the era, which prioritized the idea of language being innately structured, rule-based, and centralized around theory, not practicality. Although initially doubted, Chomsky’s hypotheses began to see prominent usage as psychological studies, like Lenneberg’s Critical Period Hypothesis or Jean Berko Gleason’s “Wug Test,” began to produce similar results relating to how language was processed in the human mind. So, how does language influence cognition? A look into cognition shows us that it refers to the mental processes involved in acquiring knowledge and understanding through experience. The idea that language can influence cognition traces back to the Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis, also known as linguistic relativity, in which Edward Sapir and Benjamin Lee Whorf proposed that the structure and vocabulary of one’s language can shape how its speakers perceive and categorize their world. For example, the variety of terms used for different shades of the same color in a language can play into an individual’s ability to process the distinctions between these nuances. The Russian language, in which there are different terms for the shades of light blue (“goluboy”) and dark blue (“siniy”), has speakers who are able to distinguish the shades more quickly than English speakers, which doesn’t make those differentiations. Likewise, some languages’ use of cardinal directions, which consist of north, south, east, and west, in place of relative directions, which are up, down, right, and left, makes significant impacts on spatial reasoning. Kuuk Thaayorre, an indigenous Austronesian language, uses cardinal directions; surprisingly, speakers of this language were more efficiently able to navigate through unfamiliar territories and locations than speakers of languages that depended more on relative directions. Does language’s effect on cognition play into metacognition? If you’ve ever thought about thinking, that’s exactly what metacognition is: the processing of our own cognition. While this may seem complicated at first, there’s a very good example of metacognition that you partake in every day. Imagine yourself thinking about what you’re going to do in 20 minutes. What language are you thinking in? What’s the tone of the voice in your head? What words are you using to describe your plans? All of these elements represent metacognition. Without that language, voice, or vocabulary that you use to plan your thoughts, you wouldn’t have a medium to keep your brain active. This has been seen to affect multilinguals, especially. Because bilinguals need to constantly and consciously switch between languages, they tend to have more mental self-monitoring and control. As a result, people who speak multiple languages tend to have improved executive function and even a delayed onset of dementia symptoms because they exercise their minds so frequently. Conclusion It’s crucial to understand that language isn’t simply a means of communication. In many ways, it’s an art form, mirroring the thoughts and expressions that we hold internally in our minds, waiting to be released to the outer world. Every word we choose and every sentence we form becomes a brushstroke on the canvas of human cognition. Not only that, but language and what it indicates about our thoughts set up our metacognition: our ability to reason and question what we think. Only by understanding these facets of our language capabilities can we fully grasp the impact that our speech, words, and writings have on ourselves subconsciously.
